About Siliguri


Siliguri Siliguri, the gateway to the entire North-Eastern part of India is located in the district of Darjeeling, West Bengal state of India. It is considered as the trade capital of North Bengal lying at an altitude of 400 feet. Located at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains with the Himalayan River- Mahananda forming the tans-boundary of the city. Siliguri shares its boundary with the Himalayan ranges and Kurseong on the north; Nepal on the west; Bangladesh on the south and New Jalpaiguri on the east. Originally, Siliguri was a small village with not much presence however it gained its prominence after the arrival of British East India Trading Company. Siliguri was merely a route that joined Kolkata and Darjeeling. For the formation of the route British established a railway in Siliguri which was then used for traveling from Kolkata to Darjeeling. British launched the Himalayan Mountain Railway- Toy Train that connected Siliguri with Darjeeling. Thus, putting Siliguri on the map.

Siliguri was declared a separate sub-division in 1907 and Siliguri Municipality was built post independence on 1949. Siliguri was earlier ruled by the Nepalese and was under the Bhutan administrative. Pleasant and favorable climatic condition made Siliguri a good place for tea cultivation. Later, Siliguri became famous for timber, transport and tourism. Adjoined with Nepal, Bhutan and other north-eastern region of India, Siliguri became the center for trade and commercial market.

With Himalayan ranges and favorable weather leading names from the industries showed interest in the city. Relatively Siliguri became the fifth biggest state in west Bengal and Trade capital of North Bengal. Soon, extravagant shopping malls, industrial buildings, educational institutions, luxurious hotels and restaurants started building up.

Siliguri, a perfect blend of dense dark forest and beautiful view of the Himalayan ranges started attracting tourist from around the world. This city is perfect balance of wonderful scenic beauty maintaining the ecological factor and trade hub. With enormous number of shopping malls Siliguri is paradise for shoppers. It is also a town known for exquisite foreign products.

With this the economy of the city saw a new growth. Dominated by the market of tea, timber transport and tourism the economy of the state became pivotal within the north-eastern region. Nearly, 3 lakh domestic visitors and over 20,000 foreign visitors come to Siliguri for trade and tourism. This has made the once quaint small town in to a bustling cosmopolitan.
