About Sikkim


Located at the north-eastern part of India, Sikkim is the second smallest state after Goa. Stretched over an area of about 7,300 sq. km, Sikkim is rich in its culture and biodiversity. From few areas of Sikkim you can view the third highest mountain Mt. Kanchenjunga and also some areas of Nepal. It is known for its pleasant weather, colonial style of housings, traditional culture and modern style of living.

Bhutia’s and Nepalese is the major inhabitant of the place along with other people who earlier visited the place for business purpose. Sikkim is well connected by roads however it does not have the privilege of rail links. If you want to travel by air then opt for a helicopter ride available at Baghdogra airport in Siliguri.

Being a tourist centric area Sikkim celebrates a Carnival during December especially for tourists. This event is held in Gangtok the capital city of Sikkim and lasts for 7 long days. Along with this the people of the states celebrates other festivals like Dasai, Tiwar, Saga Dawa, Lasoong, Losar and more.

Tourist activities like rafting, trekking, paragliding, yak safari are some of the popular one.

Some of the major tourist places are:

Nathula Pass:

Nathula Pass is the oldest pass for trade between India and China. You can see the Chinese soldiers on other side of the border and also this place is a huge adventurous region. On the way you can halt in lakshong, where a huge lake remains frozen between December to February and try Yak safari for instant fun.

Monasteries:

With around 200 monasteries some of the monasteries are worth seeing. People from all over the places come to visit the monasteries. The biggest one is the Rumtek Monastery that is about 20 km away from Gangtok. Other famous monasteries include Pemayangste, Tashiding, Enchey, Karma sangu and many.

Yuksom and Dzongri:

Yuksom and Dzongri trails are the base for the trekkers. The trek from Yuksom and Donzgri is the most popular trek for adventurous people. The trekkers get the glimpse of the magnificent gardens, and unspoiled dense forests and some rivers of Kanchenjunga Park.

M.G Marg:

M.G Marg - the busiest street of Gangtok happens to be the favourite hangout place for tourist and local dwellers. The street is traffic free and spotlessly clean. The road is surrounded with tiny shops and displays the high end street fashion and the best eateries in the entire town. The best time to visit the street is during evening when the cool breeze and glittering stars gives the visitors utmost satisfaction after long day.

Flora and Fauna:

The state is renowned for astounding varieties of birds, mammals, and flowers. The reserve houses over 450 species of feathered animal, butterflies of around 400 different species and also multicolour orchids of 450 varieties and rhododendron of 40 different species. The Deorali Orchid Park and kyongosia Alpine Sanctuary are the two best places to see these species.
